Ahhh, Paul Newman….1925 to 2008…

Paul Newman seemed to be a pretty decent guy, don’t ya think? I mean, we know of his successful acting career but when you hear how he lived his life overall – it seems as though that was just secondary – really. He was successfully married for 50 years to Joanne Woodward. Had five kids. Created a business that gave all of its profits to the charity he created to help young children cope with serious illness. He loved racing – still involved in it at 80. He just seemed to know how to enjoy life without creating scandal. Tough when you’re in the public eye. His family and closest friends have no doubt lost someone they loved dearly...

Rainy Days and a Hot Bowl of Soup…

The news today is sparking and jumping with every bit of ad infinitum details about the pros and cons of a $700 Billion Dollar Buy Out that is meant to save the U.S. economy. Recessions and depressions. I can’t quite get the hang of it all. How many people do you think – really understand the nuances behind this action? How many people do you think – are rolling their eyes and holding their breath and just plain hoping that somebody, somewhere knows what the heck they’re doing? That sometime in near future they can hope to get the food they need for the week, pay their bills on time, and maybe have 2 cents left over to buy a treat for themselves or little Johnny? I suppose if I really cared to – I’d dig deep to understand what is really going on and what it means in the long run. But it’s starting to hurt to think logically. I mean, what does it matter for the little guy to get it? It’s not going to change the outcome, is it? It’s a cold and rainy day. For now, a hot bowl of soup will have to do...

The Big Bang Theory…

So, speaking of having a break from the news...you come back and they let you know that mankind is fooling around with particles – colliding them in a big collider thingy to discover how the universe started. “Who knows?” they wonder, “Maybe we’ll be able to duplicate ‘the big bang’ of when the universe started. Oh, and there’s a tiny possibility that we’ll create a black hole in the meantime. You know, one of those monstrous things that can suck everything into them? Even light?” Uh huh. The Big Bang Theory: Play around with something till it goes Bang. In a BIG way...

No news is good news…

I have to say that I’ve always enjoyed television. And at certain times in my life I think I would’ve qualified as a ‘news junkie’ – following every bit of twaddle that erupted near and far and trying to guess what would happen next or what so-and-so would do or say. Currently, I have come to understand certain well-known health care professionals – like Dr. Andrew Weil – who encourage regularly taking a day off from the brouhaha. This makes so much sense if you ever try and monitor just how bad, nervous and fearful you can feel at the end of a day of news and reality t.v. input. So, try embracing the quiet one day. It may be hard. You’ll feel cut off from what may be exciting events. Don’t worry. The news agenda these days is to run every item into the ground. You won’t miss a thing if you wait a day. See if your mood isn’t a wee bit better come bedtime...

By the Sea…

Well, it’s not really the ’sea’. Close enough though. A strait that cuts inland around this part of the island. Looking out it’s hard to spot the land on the opposite side and the horizon looks hard and firm. The big tankers that are heading out onto the Pacific seem perched lightly on top. Barely moving. A lovely golden lab chases after a stick thrown in the cool clear water. He’s happy. The sun is warm. Could sit here forever...
